sound & media artist, activist

bio

Born in the first post-soviet days of Ukraine in January 1991, I - Mariya aka "Masha" Kashyna - grew up between caring hands of my mother, aunt, grandma and grandpa. Despite dark economic times for Ukrainian society, the grounded approach to life was the heritage that I got. After all, it was common to sing or play music in my family to let the soul go high. Back then musical education was costing "coinzzz", being worth everything to me nowadays.

My path to Germany went through my mother, who played street music as an accordionist in the city center of Hanover a many years ago. I am running a double existance between Germany and Ukraine. This "mixed identity" usually finds ways into my projects.

As a sound and media artist, I became a hybrid of Ukrainian classical training and rebellious street culture. This is evident in my affinity for what is "underground"; for that which looks to the future rather than to the past; for that which awakens global culture shaped by local coloring and experimentation from underneath. The migrant teen in me always reminds me to stay on the side of minorities, using my voice of resistence, expressing it on the vibraphone and a noise generator.

From 2012 to 2018, I studied Cultural Studies and Aesthetic Practice at the University of Hildesheim. In 2015-2016, I continued my studies at Bilgi University Istanbul (TUR) in composition, production and documentary film. During my ethnomusicology master at the Center for World Music (Hildesheim), I focused on researching about contemporary electronic sound and activism in Ukraine.

As a producer and multi-instrumentalist I am touring solo and with the duo Nustoriya. Several feature projects with performance groups like She She Pop and Tarek Atoui, with dancers (Pia Kröll and Viktoria Skrypnyk) and live painters/muralists (J. S. Sanner, Zagalaksy, Kartel, Alexander Mick, Igor Zaidel, Dimitra Kousteridou) brought me to Poland, Lithuania, Greece, Malawi, Portugal, Turkey, Russia, Italy, Ukraine and Germany.

My key words are "transformations", "balance", "integrity", "creative resistence", "trial & error" and many more.
